(too old to reply)

Hi all.

My school is running Class Server 4.0 and just recently when i've come to
install the teacher client from the https://server/school/teachersetup page
I get the following.....

Cannot Run ActiveX Control

Class Server requires your Web browser to accept signed ActiveX controls.
Make sure that you have administrator privileges on this computer, and then
follow the instructions below.

To enable ActiveX controls in your Web browser:
In Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the Tools menu.
Click the Security tab.
Under Security level for this zone, click Custom Level.
In the Security Settings dialog box, click Prompt under Download signed
ActiveX controls.
Under Run ActiveX Controls and Plug-ins, click Prompt.
Click OK to save your changes. Click Yes when prompted.
Click OK to close the dialog box.
On the View menu, click Refresh. Then continue the installation.

I am logged on with full admin rights and I have done this for each zone yet
this is all I get.
The workstations are running Windows XP with SP2 and have all the windows
updates installed and the server is 2003 with all the updates installed.
Has anyone else had this problem and is there a fix?

Any help would be appreciated on this matter.

Thanks
Scott

Hi there,

if you can access the localhost server try just using
http://server/school/teachersetup

There is a work round to atleast allow you to install the teacher client
onto your system but might not be able to access the database.

when you reach the 'Cannot Run ActiveX Control' page the URL will be
https://server/school/teachersetup?Step=5 simple replace the 5 with a 6 so
that you will have https://server/school/teachersetup?Step=6

The ActiveX control on the teachersetup page sets up the client registry so
that the Teacher Client, once installed, knows the school URL and can
communicate with the server. You can skip that step by downloading and
installing the Teacher Client directly from
http://server/school/teachersetup/setup.exe.

If you do this, then you'll have to enter the school URL when you first run
the Teacher Client.

So would it be possible to apply an MST file to the MSI that adds the URL during
installation. Any instruction for how to do this?

I don't know what an MST file is, but basically all the ActiveX control does
is pre-configure the registry. If you want to see the values, run the
ActiveX control, and then look at Local Machine/Software/Microsoft/Class
Server/Client.

Thanks for the info.

An MST file is a Transform for an MSI file that modifies the installation. I am
no expert though.

I believe installing the teacher from the Web needs Admin access on the PC. If I
give Admin access to the teachers they will install everything that they get
asked to install from the Internet. Basically a large number of end users, if
asked "Would you like to install this unknown bit of software on your PC" will
always say "Yes". They generally assume that anything that asks to be installed
is quite safe and needed to help the system run. This assumption applies to
anything that says it is safe. All Mal ware says it is safe and needed. Hence
the need to not install any software via downloads. To safely do this requires
that an administrator attends (maybe via Remote Desktop) the PC and installs the
download, this is very time consuming. I expect to have about 1000 PC to manage
within a year or two (about 600 now). The teacher software needs to be deployed
via Group Policy.

I think though it is not required at all on Learning Gateway so the problem will
go away.

Yes, if you're running IE 7, this is a known bug. I posted the permanent fix
in your other thread. Let me know if that works.

Thanks,

Hi

I came across the same problem and got around it by deploying the teacher
client via active directory. the client software is an MSI which makes it
perfect for AD deployment.

Hope this helps
